Control of noxious weeds and mosses in the pot using organic cover materials.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid noxious weeds in pots, not least because of the restrictions on the use of crop protection products. The covering of pots using organic material is an effective and sustainable alternative. Several suitable products are available, and their use depends on the type of crop and the size and environment of the pot.

The use of organic cover materials makes for a natural appearance, as well as ensuring sustainability and having multiple practical benefits. We frequently use materials such as tree bark, (coconut) fibre and rice hulls, all useful because they can be used on any size of pot. Because these natural materials are simply spread on the soil surface of pots for covering purposes after potting, they can also be processed mechanically.
Many kinds of organic cover material either degrade slowly or hardly at all, making them a long-term solution to the problem of noxious weeds and moss growth on pots. At the same time, this reduces the need for control and means that that pots need to be cleaned less frequently.

Noxious weeds and mosses need moisture to germinate and grow. The soil surface of pots will dry out faster when our natural aggregates are used. A covering layer on the pot also prevents the evaporation of moisture from inside the pot, because it interferes with capillary action. Both these properties result in a drier top layer in which noxious weeds cannot germinate.

HERBAEDECK COVER MATERIALS

Herbaedeck 1 (Bark)

Herbaedeck 1 is a slightly coarser version of Herbaedeck Mini. Herbaedeck 1 is made from a particularly hard type of tree bark, which ensures minimal degradation. Bark is highly effective in fighting noxious weeds and mosses – including liver moss – and is also easily applied to pots (including mechanical application). Herbaedeck Bark also adds a valuable ornamental element to pots by virtue of its naturally dark colour.

Herbaedeck Mini

This is a finer variety of our tree bark aggregate material, suitable for smaller pots. Degradation is also minimal with this version thanks to the hardness of the bark, so it provides long-term protection from noxious weeds and mosses. Herbaedeck Mini can easily be applied mechanically.

Herbaedeck HBR

This is the successor to Herbaedeck BVR. We have extensively tested new combinations under various circumstances throughout the past year. Based on our findings, Herbaedeck HBR has been developed.
Thanks to the composition of HBR, bonding to the potting medium is optimal, which makes this special cover material suitable for both covered and outdoor culture. The composition of the organic materials also facilitates efficient mechanical application, along with a high permeability for watering and a reduction of evaporation from the pot.

Herbaedeck Rice hulls

During the processing of rice, the hulls are separated from the rice grains using steam. The hulls remain intact, but the treatment removes all possibility of germination Because of this our rice hulls are RHP-certified; a guarantee of freedom from any noxious weeds.
We discourage the use of rice hulls as a cover material for outdoor culture, because the material is easily blown away due to its light weight.
However, the light weight of this fine-grained product makes rice hulls ideal for scattering on trays and for use in covered cultures.

Herbaedeck Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a type of mineral (stone) with a layered structure. When heated, the moisture between the layers expands, pushing them apart to create a harmonica-like structure. This results in a very light type of stone, which is full of air thanks to the open pores. Vermiculite is applied to trays or pots as a loose layer which eventually adheres to the potting medium, giving it a firmer hold on the surface.
Vermiculite is ideal for use as an insulating layer for vegetable plants, and can also be used as a sowing medium.
